AUGUST 3, 2026 – A HISTORIC FIRST DAY FOR UCP+ AND OUR MEMBERS

Some moments change an organization forever. For UCP+ Central California, the journey to August 3, 2026, was already taking shape in May 2019, when the UCP+ Futures Committee began defining a vision centered on community, service, adaptability, integration, warmth, and acceptance while identifying the programming and spaces members would truly need before the project moved forward. More than seven years of dreaming, planning, fundraising, designing, and building transformed that early vision into a new 40,000-square-foot Fresno campus. On opening day, the ribbon was waiting and our team, families, members, supporters, and friends were gathered – but this day was never really about a building. It was about the people who would come through its doors.

Our goal was to develop a shared future that comfortably integrates the people we serve into the greater community – developing a home that unites the Fresno Valley community as neighbors. The UCP+ Futures Committee explored the idea and discussed developing experiences that bring the Valley community together as neighbors. After much debate, the committee leaned toward a possible mission statement that captured that vision: “Developing experiences that unite the Fresno Valley community together as neighbors.”

OUR UCP+ MEMBERS FIRST ARRIVAL AT THE NEW UCP+ FRESNO CAMPUS

Monday, August 3, 2026, began differently than any Monday before it. That morning, UCP+ members were picked up from their homes as they are each program day. But this time, their destination was somewhere new – the new UCP+ Central California Fresno campus.

As the buses began arriving, a moment more than seven years in the making was finally here. One by one, our members exited their buses and entered their new campus for the very first time. Smiles, laughter, excitement, and anticipation filled the morning as they began discovering their new classrooms and spaces.

For years, this campus had existed in plans, drawings, fundraising campaigns, construction updates, photographs, and conversations about the future. On August 3, all of that changed. Our members weren’t arriving for a tour or a visit.

They were arriving for their first day. And for the first time, this new campus was theirs.

A RIBBON CUTTING WITH A GREATER MEANING

The Ribbon Cutting Ceremony marked a monumental milestone in the history of UCP+ Central California. It was the moment when years of vision and perseverance became something our members could see, touch, explore, and experience for themselves.

The ribbon represented far more than the completion of construction. It represented wider possibilities. Greater accessibility. More room to learn. More room to create. More room to perform, cook, make art, build friendships, develop independence, and discover what comes next. When the ribbon was cut, the future of UCP+ Central California did not feel far away anymore. It was standing right in front of us.

A HANDSHAKE THAT CAPTURED THE ENTIRE DAY

Among all the excitement, one quiet interaction captured the meaning of August 3 in a way no speech ever could. During this historic first day, one UCP+ member approached CEO Roger Slingerman, reached out his hand, shook Roger’s hand, and thanked him. It was a simple gesture, but behind that handshake were more than seven years of work, perseverance, fundraising, planning, construction, and an unwavering belief that our members deserved a campus designed with their needs at the center. For Roger and the entire UCP+ team, that thank-you was a powerful reminder of why every challenge along the way had mattered. Sometimes the biggest moments are the quietest ones.

DESIGNED AROUND THE PEOPLE WE SERVE

The new Fresno campus was created to remove barriers and open possibilities. Accessibility was not added as an afterthought – it was considered throughout the design. Most doorways were intentionally widened to 48 and 42 inches to provide easier passage for larger power wheelchairs and space for support staff to move alongside members. Twelve fully accessible changing rooms – including two with roll-in showers – provide greater dignity and support for personal care.

The double-sided teaching kitchen includes stations designed for both ambulatory and non-ambulatory participants, creating opportunities for more members to learn and participate. A fully accessible pottery studio gives members space to create. An indoor performance stage with a wheelchair lift gives performers a place to be seen and heard. The campus also includes classrooms, art display areas, a student lounge, an on-site nurse’s station, and welcoming spaces designed for connection, learning, creativity, and community.

Every one of those features matters. But on August 3, we finally got to see what they look like when they are filled with the people they were designed for.

THIS IS WHAT YEARS OF BELIEVING LOOKS LIKE

Buildings are measured in square feet. This one will be measured in what happens inside it. It will be measured in the first piece of pottery created in the studio. The first recipe prepared in the teaching kitchen. The first performance on the stage. The first new skill learned in a classroom. The first friendship strengthened in the student lounge. The first moment a member moves through a doorway with more ease because someone thought carefully about making it wider. Those moments are why this campus exists. August 3, 2026 was not the finish line. It was the day years of preparation finally gave way to possibility.

A DAY MADE POSSIBLE BY A COMMUNITY

A milestone of this magnitude does not happen because of one person. It happens because a community believes in a mission strongly enough to keep moving it forward. To every donor, board member, staff member, family, community partner, foundation, contractor, volunteer, supporter, and friend who helped make this campus possible: thank you. You helped build more than walls, classrooms, studios, and gathering spaces. You helped create an environment where accessibility, dignity, opportunity, and belonging are part of the foundation. And to the UCP+ team members who worked tirelessly through moving weekend – unloading moving trucks, building shelving, unpacking, arranging spaces, and preparing every detail before our members arrived – August 3^rd, 2026 was the moment all of that work became real.

WELCOME HOME, UCP+ CENTRAL CALIFORNIA FRESNO CAMPUS

There will be many important days ahead at this campus. There will be classes, performances, celebrations, artwork, friendships, accomplishments, laughter, and thousands of everyday moments that will become part of the story of UCP+ Central California. But there will only ever be one August 3, 2026. One first arrival. One first walk and roll through those doors. One first Ribbon Cutting Ceremony. One first day in a campus created for the future of our members. And one unforgettable day when a dream that had lived on paper, in plans, in construction meetings, in fundraising campaigns, and in the hearts of so many people finally became a place our members could experience as their own.

AS DISABILITY PRIDE MONTH IS CELEBRATED, A VISION COMES TO LIFE

Throughout July, communities across the nation celebrate Disability Pride Month—a time to honor the disability rights movement, celebrate the achievements and contributions of people with disabilities, and reaffirm a simple but powerful truth: accessibility is a civil right, not a privilege. At UCP+ Central California, those ideals are coming to life in a remarkable way. As Disability Pride Month unfolds, the final intentional touches are being completed on UCP+’s newly transformed 40,000-square-foot campus, with members set to walk through its doors for the very first time in early August, 2026.

The timing feels especially meaningful. While the nation spends July celebrating inclusion, dignity, and equal opportunity, UCP+ is putting the finishing touches on a campus where those values have been thoughtfully built into every square foot. This isn’t simply the completion of a renovation. It is the realization of a vision years in the making—one that proves accessibility is most powerful when it is considered from the very beginning. When the doors open in early August, they won’t mark the end of Disability Pride Month. They will carry its spirit forward.

ACCESSIBILITY WAS NEVER AN AFTERTHOUGHT—IT WAS THE BLUEPRINT

At UCP+ Central California, we believe accessibility is not a privilege—it is a fundamental civil right. That belief became the foundation for every decision made in the design and renovation of our new 40,000+ square-foot campus. Long before construction began, we committed to creating a space that would go beyond simply meeting the minimum requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) by embracing the principles of Universal Design and intentional accessibility. Every feature was thoughtfully planned to remove barriers before they ever existed, allowing people with disabilities to move through the campus with greater independence, confidence, and dignity.

From four-foot-wide doorways that exceed ADA standards and better accommodate larger mobility devices to our fully accessible pottery studio, adaptive teaching kitchen, indoor performance stage with a wheelchair lift, 12 adult accessible changing rooms, welcoming gathering spaces, and purpose-built classrooms, every detail reflects our belief that inclusion begins at the design table—not after construction is complete. Our campus was intentionally built to foster creativity, learning, connection, and opportunity while creating an environment where people with disabilities feel welcomed, respected, and empowered from the moment they arrive. At UCP+, accessibility was never treated as an afterthought or a checklist for compliance; it became the blueprint for building a place where everyone belongs. By designing with intention rather than obligation, we are helping fulfill the true spirit of the ADA and demonstrating that when organizations invest in accessible spaces from the very beginning, they create stronger communities where every individual has the opportunity to unlock their full potential.

THE “+” MEANS EVERYONE

For many people, the name United Cerebral Palsy still creates a common misconception.

Today, UCP+ Central California proudly serves people across the full spectrum of the disability community, including individuals with cerebral palsy, autism, Down syndrome, intellectual and developmental disabilities, traumatic brain injuries, and many other disabilities.

That is why the organization embraced the plus (+). It represents everyone and every person who deserves opportunities to learn, create, work, build friendships, and live with dignity and independence.

THE DISABILITY PRIDE FLAG REPRESENTS THE PEOPLE WE SERVE EVERY DAY

The Disability Pride Flag, designed by disability advocate Ann Magill, celebrates the diversity, strength, and resilience of the disability community.

Red represents physical disabilities.
Gold represents neurodivergence.
White represents invisible and undiagnosed disabilities, chronic illnesses, and mental health conditions.
Blue represents emotional and psychiatric disabilities.
Green represents sensory disabilities.
The charcoal black background honors disabled people who have lost their lives because of ableism, violence, neglect, illness, institutionalization, and systemic injustice while symbolizing resilience.

At UCP+, those colors represent the people the organization proudly serves every day.

ACCESSIBILITY IS A CIVIL RIGHT—NOT A PRIVILEGE

The Americans with Disabilities Act forever changed the landscape of civil rights by affirming that people with disabilities deserve equal access to community life.

From the earliest planning meetings, UCP+ Central California made a conscious decision that accessibility would never be treated as an afterthought. It became the guiding principle behind every design decision because accessibility is a civil right—not a privilege.

GOING BEYOND ADA STANDARDS

While the ADA commonly requires accessible door openings with a minimum clear width of 36 inches in many situations, UCP+ intentionally chose to go beyond those minimum standards by designing much of the campus with approximately four-foot-wide (48-inch) interior doorways.

Those extra inches matter. Many UCP+ members use larger power wheelchairs, custom seating systems, adaptive mobility equipment, and specialized devices that require additional room to maneuver comfortably and independently. The wider doorways reduce difficult maneuvering, increase safety, and provide greater freedom throughout the campus.

INTENTIONAL SPACES THAT UNLOCK POTENTIAL

Every room was designed with purpose. The dual-sided adaptive teaching kitchen allows wheelchair users and ambulatory participants to cook together using accessible appliances and workstations. The indoor performance stage includes an accessibility lift so performers of all abilities can take center stage. The campus also features 12 fully accessible changing rooms equipped with adult-sized changing tables and ceiling lifts, with two rooms also offering accessible showers for greater dignity and comfort.

A POTTERY STUDIO WHERE CREATIVITY HAS NO BARRIERS

Among the most exciting additions is the fully accessible pottery studio—designed specifically so artists with disabilities can create, learn, and thrive without barriers. Members will also have opportunities to display and sell their artwork in beautifully illuminated backlit display cases located in the building’s lobby, transforming the entrance into a gallery celebrating creativity, entrepreneurship, and achievement. The first thing guests will see is not disability—they will see talent, creativity, and possibility.

A CAMPUS BUILT TO BRING PEOPLE TOGETHER

This facility was intentionally designed to bring the disability community and the entire Central Valley community together in one welcoming place. Families, neighbors, volunteers, community partners, and visitors of all abilities will gather here to learn, create, celebrate, and build lasting connections. True inclusion happens when communities come together.

This campus represents decades of advocacy, thousands of conversations with families, and a steadfast belief that people with disabilities deserve spaces intentionally designed for them. Every widened doorway, every classroom, every creative space, and every gathering place sends one powerful message: You belong here.

At the annual United Cerebral Palsy (UCP) National Conference held in Calgary, Canada, UCP+ Central California Executive Director Roger Slingerman was recognized with one of the organization’s highest leadership honors—the Kathy O. Maul Leadership Award.

This prestigious national award is presented annually to an exemplary UCP affiliate executive who embodies the leadership, vision, innovation, and commitment to UCP’s mission demonstrated by the late Kathy O. As UCP+ Central California continues expanding services and preparing to open its new 40,000 sq. ft. campus at 2044 E. Nees Ave. in Fresno, Ca., Roger remains focused on the same mission that has guided his leadership from the beginning: creating opportunities, removing barriers, and helping individuals with disabilities achieve their goals.

Honoring the Legacy of Russell Takeuchi Sr.

At the heart of the inaugural UCP+ & CareMax Senior Solutions Golf Tournament Fundraiser was a man whose compassion, generosity, and dedication to the disability community helped shape the future of UCP+ Central California for generations to come — Russell Takeuchi Sr.

This special event was held in loving memory of Russell, a beloved UCP+ board member whose passion for helping individuals with disabilities was evident in everything he did. Russell dedicated countless hours to supporting the mission of UCP+ Central California and was instrumental in helping the organization secure its transformative new 40,000-square-foot campus in Fresno. His vision for a larger, more accessible facility was rooted in one simple belief: every individual deserves opportunities, dignity, and a place where they can unlock their full potential.

Russell was also deeply passionate about golf. As a longtime member of Copper River Country Club, the course held a special place in his heart. Hosting the tournament fundraiser at Copper River made the day even more meaningful, bringing together community members, supporters, sponsors, golfers and friends and family in a location that represented one of Russell’s favorite pastimes. Family members and lifelong friends of Russell also played in the tournament to honor his memory and celebrate the incredible legacy he left behind. It was more than a fundraiser — it was a celebration of his life, his legacy, and the incredible impact he made. 

A Historic Milestone for UCP+ Central california

The UCP+ and CareMax Senior Solutions Golf Tournament marked an exciting milestone for the organization as it became the very first golf fundraiser tournament in UCP+ Central California history.

For an organization that has served the disability community for over 70+ years, this event represented much more than a day on the golf course. It symbolized growth, community collaboration, and a bold new chapter as UCP+ prepares to open its newly renovated campus designed to better serve individuals of all abilities.

From the very beginning, the vision for this inaugural event was ambitious. Organizing a successful golf tournament requires extensive planning, industry knowledge, sponsorship coordination, course logistics, player management, and an understanding of the unique culture surrounding golf fundraising events. Thankfully, UCP+ did not have to do it alone.

Leadership That Helped Drive the Vision

Another major force behind the tournament’s success was the leadership and experience of UCP+ Executive Director Roger Slingerman.

Roger’s lifelong connection to golf brought a unique level of authenticity and insight to the event. Having played golf since childhood, Roger possesses a deep understanding of the game, golf culture, and what creates a successful tournament experience for players and sponsors alike.

In addition to his passion for golf, Roger brings decades of nonprofit fundraising experience to UCP+. Prior to leading UCP+ Central California, Roger worked extensively with Special Olympics, where he traveled worldwide helping support and expand programs that empower individuals with disabilities.

That background proved invaluable throughout the planning and execution of the tournament. Roger understood not only how to create a successful fundraising event, but how to ensure the day remained mission-focused and deeply connected to the individuals UCP+ serves.

His leadership helped unite sponsors, volunteers, golfers, and community partners around a common goal: creating brighter futures for individuals with disabilities throughout the Central Valley.

A Community United for a Greater Purpose

The inaugural tournament was filled with unforgettable moments — from golfers teeing off beneath the beautiful Central California sky to community members gathering together in support of UCP+’s mission.

Sponsors, donors, volunteers, players, UCP+ staff and friends and family of Russell Takeuchi Sr. all contributed to making the day a tremendous success. Their generosity directly supports the continued development of the new UCP+ campus, a state-of-the-art facility designed to provide expanded programs, accessible spaces, life skills training, creative arts opportunities, and empowering services for individuals of all abilities.

The event also reflected the evolving identity of UCP+ itself. The “+” symbolizes growth, expanded services, and a commitment to serving more individuals across a wider spectrum of disabilities and needs. This golf tournament embodied that spirit perfectly — bringing people together, opening new doors, and creating opportunities that extend far beyond the golf course.

Looking Toward the Future

While this may have been the first UCP+ golf tournament, it certainly will not be the last.

The overwhelming support from the community demonstrated the powerful impact of partnerships, leadership, and shared purpose. Most importantly, it honored the memory of Russell Takeuchi Sr. in a way that reflected the values he carried throughout his life: generosity, service, community, and compassion.

As UCP+ Central California continues preparing to open its new 40,000-square-foot campus, events like this help fuel the organization’s mission of unlocking potential and creating a community without boundaries.

UCP+ Central California – 95% Complete and Built With Students in Mind

Megan “Mimi” Turner walks slowly toward the window in the new student lounge. Sunlight pours across the floor and catches the edges of freshly painted walls. She pauses. It is the first time she has ever seen this view from this room. Outside, steel beams frame the sky. Fresh concrete stretches across a courtyard that will soon echo with conversation, music, and laughter. The new UCP+ Central California campus rises in front of her — not as a blueprint, not as a fundraising rendering, but as something real. Solid. Waiting.
And for the first time, it is almost finished. The campus is now 95% complete. Last week, every student in the Government class at UCP+ Central California was given a “First Look” at the nearly completed campus. What they experienced was more than a walkthrough. It was a glimpse into their future.

70+ YEARS IN THE MAKING

This campus stands in Fresno, California — in the heart of Central California — where, in 1954, a small group of determined parents refused to accept the limited options available to their children with disabilities. They envisioned something better. A beautiful place where their sons and daughters could gather, socialize, learn, and simply belong.
At the time, it was an audacious dream. Seventy-plus years later, that dream stands in steel and glass.

OUTGROWING THE WALLS

Mimi is one of the 120 students in the UCP+ adult day program — a program that has long outgrown its current 14,500-square-foot building. In classrooms filled to capacity, staff make every inch count. Hallways become gathering spaces. Schedules are carefully staggered. The community thrives — but within tight walls. Now imagine nearly tripling that space. Under the leadership of Executive Director Roger Slingerman, UCP+ Central California is preparing for one of the most significant expansions in its history. The new campus will expand to more than 40,000 square feet — a transformational leap.
Room to breathe.
Room to learn.
Room to create.

DESIGNED WITH DIGNITY AT THE CENTER

This campus was not designed with accessibility as an afterthought. It was designed with accessibility at the center. It will include 12 fully accessible changing rooms, including two with showers — a feature families describe as life-changing. Quality of life here is not theoretical. It is measured in independence. In comfort. In time spent without barriers.

THE GOVERNMENT CLASS FIRST LOOK

As the Government class walked through the nearly completed building, their reactions ranged from wide-eyed silence to spontaneous smiles. Some stood speechless in the new student lounge. Others peeked into classrooms and imagined where art, music, and leadership discussions would soon take place. They understood what this space represents: a place built intentionally for them.
For many students, this was the first time the vision felt real.
Not a plan.
Not a promise.
But a place.

THE STUDENT ART STORE: CREATIVITY ON DISPLAY

One of the most breathtaking features of the new campus is the student art store — a beautifully built retail space designed with backlit shelving and an art gallery aesthetic. This is not simply a display area. It is a professional, thoughtfully curated environment where student artwork will be showcased with pride and sold to the public. The lighting highlights each brushstroke. The shelving frames every piece with intention. The space communicates something powerful: their work matters. For our students, this store represents entrepreneurship, visibility, and validation. In Fresno, this campus stands as both promise and proof that the vision of a handful of parents in 1954 did not fade. It grew.

As students gazed out the lounge windows during their First Look, they were seeing more than a building. They were seeing possibility.It is knowing there will be space for everyone. It is having changing rooms that allow them to stay all day with comfort and dignity.
It is understanding that this place — in Fresno, in Central California — was built with them in mind. For our students and their families, this changes everything. And at 95% complete, the future is almost here.

An Unstoppable Spirit in Motion: Shannon’s Passport is full and So is her Purpose

Shannon’s Diagnosis early in life

Shannon’s journey began with an unexpected and life-altering experience. At the age of two, she developed a high fever that left her unable to walk. Concerned and confused, her parents took her to Shriners Hospital, where she was diagnosed with cerebral palsy (CP). This moment was particularly emotional for Shannon’s mother, Lisa, who learned about the diagnosis directly from the doctors at Shriners—a diagnosis no one had clearly communicated before. It was a confusing and overwhelming experience that marked the beginning of a new chapter filled with both challenges and opportunities for growth. But even then, Shannon’s determination and her family’s love formed the foundation of what would become a powerful and inspiring life story.

Therapy and Braces: Building Strength

Thanks to a connection through a family friend, Shannon was sponsored into the Elks Club, which enabled her to receive in-home physical therapy. Therapists would visit her home regularly to stretch her legs—an essential step in maintaining mobility and flexibility. As part of this process, they would apply casts to her legs. These weren’t just for support—they served as molds to create custom braces that would help Shannon walk more comfortably and with better alignment. She wore AFOs, or Ankle-Foot Orthoses, and paired them with forearm crutches (also known as elbow crutches), allowing her greater independence and movement as a child. Although she was mobile, Shannon faced difficulties at school. She fell frequently, and doctors recommended she wear a helmet. But Shannon, already dealing with bullying, bravely refused the helmet, understanding that it would only draw more unwanted attention. Despite these challenges, she continued pushing forward with grace and grit.

A Life Full of Love and Animals

Growing up in the rural town of Auberry, California, Shannon enjoyed a vibrant and lively childhood. Her family home was filled with animals—pets of all kinds—that brought joy and comfort to her life. She recalls swimming often, especially during the time they lived on a houseboat. This unique experience added an adventurous spirit to her childhood. Shannon’s family believed in treating her just like everyone else. Her mother encouraged her to participate in household chores and take part in the daily responsibilities of family life. The atmosphere at home was one of warmth, humor, and resilience, shaping Shannon into someone who is not only independent but also deeply connected to those around her.

From School Challenges to Graduation

Shannon began her education in a general education setting, not initially placed in special education classes. But over time, her physical needs made it necessary for her to receive more support, and she was eventually placed in special education. School wasn’t easy—she experienced bullying and social isolation, especially when classmates didn’t understand her condition. One particularly emotional memory for her and her family was when she tried out for the cheerleading team. With the help of her best friend, who lifted her during the routine, Shannon performed in front of her peers. Her mother, watching from the sidelines, was brought to tears by the courage and kindness shown in that moment. Despite the obstacles, Shannon graduated from high school and left with experiences that shaped her into someone who knows the importance of compassion and advocacy.

Gaining Independence Through CVRC

After high school, Shannon was eager to live independently and participate more fully in her community. Initially, she received support through EEOC, but the organization was unable to provide transportation to and from outings due to her location in Auberry. Her family was frustrated by the lack of explanation, but ultimately they found a new path through Central Valley Regional Center (CVRC). CVRC provided Shannon with options that led her to move into a group home in Fresno. She has now lived in the same home for 13 years, where she shares space with five other residents and one caregiver. Shannon shares a room with one roommate and enjoys the structure, community, and independence this living arrangement offers. Living in Fresno also gives her greater access to day programs, activities, and healthcare services that would be difficult to reach from Auberry.

Finding Joy at UCP+ Central California

Two years ago, Shannon joined the UCP+ adult day program—and it changed her life. She quickly became a beloved member of the community and formed a close bond with Steve Sousa, the Performing Arts Instructor. Shannon speaks glowingly about Steve, calling him kind, funny, and incredibly helpful. When she experiences agitation or stress, she is at risk for seizures. Steve has helped her learn calming and relaxation techniques that reduce these episodes and allow her to feel more in control. At UCP+, Shannon isn’t just a participant—she’s an active contributor, sharing her humor, insights, and joy with everyone around her. The environment has given her a sense of purpose and belonging that she hadn’t felt in other programs.

SHANNON’S Adventures and Travel

Shannon’s life has been full of adventure. Starting with church group trips in her youth, she has traveled across North America—visiting Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Colorado, and Niagara Falls. These trips have given her unforgettable experiences and stories to share. She especially loves the water and recalls swimming in the ocean in Mexico with support from those around her. Through various day programs and her group home, she continues to explore the world around her. Travel has empowered Shannon to embrace her independence and fulfill her love of new places and cultures.

Advocacy and Friendship

Shannon’s experiences with bullying shaped her into someone who values kindness and justice. She recalls how, as a child, other students wrongly believed that cerebral palsy was contagious. Her best friend stood up for her, saying, ‘If I can touch Shannon and not get sick, then no one else will either.’ That moment became a foundational memory for Shannon. Today, she shares this same message with others. She wants the world to know: ‘Respect us. Don’t bully us. We’re just like everyone else. Give us a chance to be your friend.’ Her advocacy is rooted in personal experience, and she continues to spread awareness and empathy wherever she goes.

Shannon Bishop’s story is one of perseverance, joy, and community. From her early diagnosis to her current independence, she has faced every challenge with strength and optimism. Her love for animals, family, and travel—combined with her honesty and humor—make her an incredible representative of what it means to have an Unstoppable Spirit. Through UCP+, Rare Earth Coffee, and the support of her community, Shannon’s story continues to inspire others to be kind, inclusive, and courageous.

In Her Own Words: Respect and Inclusion

When asked what she wants people to know about individuals with cerebral palsy, Shannon doesn’t hesitate to speak from the heart:

“You need to respect us. Don’t bully us. We’re just like everyone else. You need to give us a chance to be your friend.”

She also explained a painful but important memory from her childhood: other children thought they could ‘catch’ cerebral palsy from her, like an illness. Shannon shared how her best friend would stand up for her, telling everyone:

“If I can touch Shannon and I don’t get sick, then no one else will either.”

That moment stayed with Shannon. It helped her learn something she carries with her to this day—that she is just like everybody else. Her experiences have shaped her into a deeply empathetic and compassionate person who values inclusion, friendship, and truth.

This Year’s Theme: The Wild West

This year’s camp theme, “The Wild West,” transformed the entire experience into a time-traveling adventure through the rugged charm of the American frontier. Campers arrived ready to embrace the spirit of the West, donning cowboy hats, boots, and bandanas as they stepped into a week of themed activities designed to foster creativity, connection, and fun. The old-timey photo booth, with sepia-toned portraits and period costumes, became an instant favorite, allowing each student to strike their best frontier pose and take home a piece of history.

Activities That Brought the Wild West to Life

The week was filled with action, creativity, and camaraderie. Campers learned how to line dance and showcased their moves at the high-spirited Hoe Down dance. They panned for gold like true pioneers, took aim in a sharpshooting challenge, and expressed their individuality through bracelet and jewelry making. Friendly races brought out the spirit of competition and teamwork, while creating moments of laughter and encouragement for all. Each activity was designed to celebrate ability, build confidence, and create lasting memories for every participant at UCP+ Camp Mountain High.

Empowerment Through Inclusion

The 2025 trip continued UCP+’s legacy of creating inclusive, empowering spaces where students of all abilities can thrive. At UCP+ Camp Mountain High, disability was never seen as a limitation. Instead, it was a source of strength, resilience, and perspective. Our students demonstrated courage, humor, and creativity in every activity they took part in, reminding us all that unlocking potential begins with opportunity.

“They Told Me I Wouldn’t… So I Did” -LaShawn Jordan

A Difficult Start Met with Determination

LaShawn was born two months premature, weighing only two pounds. Doctors warned his parents he wouldn’t survive—suggesting they prepare for a funeral before he even entered the world. They predicted he’d never speak, walk, or graduate school. But even in his incubator, LaShawn showed fight—gripping his father’s hand and proving from the start that he was stronger than anyone imagined..

“They Told Me I Wouldn’t… So I Did”

LaShawn has spent his entire life proving people wrong. He not only spoke fluently, but graduated from Clovis East High School in 2007—an emotional triumph for him and his father, who cheered him on every step of the way. “It felt like vindication,” LaShawn says. “Like validation. Like, I told you so.”

Now 36 years old, LaShawn reflects on the judgment and low expectations that were placed on him simply because of his cerebral palsy. “People look at us different. We get laughed at, mocked. And yes, I notice. I feel it. But I keep going.”

Resilience Runs in the Family

LaShawn credits much of his courage and character to his late father, who advocated for him fiercely and inspired him daily. Even now, more than a decade after his passing, Las Shawn still hears his father’s voice in moments of quiet. “He wanted me to be strong. To push myself. I still wear the clothes he gave me.”

Finding a Second Home at UCP+

LaShawn joined UCP+ Central California in 2011 and immediately found a new sense of belonging. “It’s like family here,” he says of the staff and fellow participants. Through UCP+, LaShawn receives physical therapy twice a week, working specifically to improve strength in his left side—a goal his father always encouraged.

His long-time support staff, including his Direct Support Professional (DSP) Justin and his care provider at home, help him live independently and maintain a full life. “I’ve had my own money since 2014,” he says proudly. “My dad would’ve loved that.”

A Voice for Education, Awareness, and Sports

A self-declared sports fanatic, LaShawn is especially passionate about football—his Vikings loyalty going back to 1998. He talks about games with remarkable memory and intensity, recalling moments that still bring emotion to his voice. “In 2009, when Brett threw that interception… I didn’t cry. I threw something.”

He also channels that energy into podcasts, attending classes through CMAC and dreaming of launching his own show in UCP+’s upcoming media room at the new campus. “I’d have Roger as my first guest,” he says with a grin.

But beyond sports, LaShawn is deeply committed to educating others about cerebral palsy. “We’re just regular people with a disability. Talk to us normally. We understand you. And we want to be understood too.”

Love, Loss, and Looking Ahead

LaShawn has experienced significant loss—most notably his father and his first care provider—but he’s also built a beautiful life full of connection and love. He’s engaged to his fiancée, Cicely, who also receives services through UCP+. “We’ve been together 10 years,” he beams.

Even when health setbacks temporarily kept him out of program, LaShawn kept in touch with his UCP+ family, focused on healing, and returned as soon as he was able.

LaShawn is the definition of unstoppable—not just for what he’s overcome, but for the way he continues to show up with heart, humor, and honesty. He tells the truth, speaks his mind, and inspires everyone he meets to be better, kinder, and stronger.

He is a voice for equity, a champion of visibility, and a reminder that with support and determination, anything is possible.

Unstoppable Spirit: Victoria and her mother dora’s Inspiring Journey

“It’s a hard battle, but battles are only given to warrior families like us.” – Dora Gamino

A Journey Begins

Dora’s pregnancy with her third child, Victoria, was mostly normal until a diagnosis of gestational diabetes. When Victoria was born, Dora and her husband noticed her clubbed foot and shorter extremities. Soon, doctors diagnosed Victoria with Diastrophic Dysplasia, a type of dwarfism. Despite these challenges, Victoria was otherwise healthy.

Early Development Milestones

Victoria’s early development was slightly delayed. She began sitting up on her own at 14 months and started scooting on her bottom at 20 months. At 11 months, their pediatrician recommended the UCPCC Parent and Me program, which became a lifeline for Dora and Victoria.

Finding Support and Hope

The UCPCC Parent and Me sessions were transformative. Dora, who had fallen into depression due to her daughter’s condition, found motivation and hope through the program. Victoria learned to stand with assistance, applying these skills at home. The program’s early intervention specialists also visited their home, providing essential support.

Progress and Milestones

By age three, Victoria was sitting independently and scooting around. Although CVRC stopped funding separate physical therapy sessions after age three, Victoria continued to make remarkable progress. She has undergone four surgeries: one for club foot correction, two for her back, and an upcoming one for scoliosis in July 2024. Initially, doctors considered amputating her legs to improve mobility with prosthetics but later decided she would be more mobile with her legs intact.

School and Achievements

Now eight years old and in the third grade, Victoria uses a wheelchair outside but walks on her knees at home. She excels in school, consistently earning Student of the Month awards and winning spelling bees. Victoria loves to dance, draw, and socialize. Her mother, Dora, proudly shares that having a disability does not prevent someone from living a normal life and achieving great things. Instead, it offers a unique perspective on what is possible.

Moving Forward

Dora Gamino has been an early intervention specialist at UCPCC Parent and Me program in Hanford, Ca. since January 2023. Inspired by her journey with Victoria, she is dedicated to helping other families navigate similar challenges.
